The HEIDENHAIN VM 182 incorporates a precise two-coordinate phase grating and a scanning unit the moves of the grating without mechanical contact. The scale is embedded in a massive, U-shaped steel profile, and can therefore be mounted directly on the machine table. Along with the measuring position in longitudinal direction, the VM 182 also captures small errors (± 1 mm) perpendicular to the direction of measurement.

The HEIDENHAIN VM 182 provides detailed information on machine accuracy with a minimum of time spent on mounting and adjustment. The VM 182 Comparator offers the following features...
- Two-coordinate DIADUR phase grating on steel
- 4µm grating pitch in longitudinal and transverse directions
- Coefficient of thermal expansion - atherm= 10 ppm/K
- Measuring lengths of 420mm, 520mm, 1020mm, 122 mm, and 1520mm
- Measuring range in transverse direction is ±1 mm
- Reference mark at beginning of measuring length
- Accuracy grade in longitudinal direction is ± 1µm
- Accuracy grade in transverse direction is ± 1.5µm
